Joseph had been founded in 1843 on the banks of the Missouri River in northwestern Missouri. It became a starting point for settlers moving farther west, especially after 1859, when trains began to reach it. It was from St. Joseph in 1860 that the famous but short-lived Pony Express commenced its relay service to California. Another indication of the frontier nature of the region was that on April 3, 1882, while the Shaughnessys were still living in Moberly, the notorious outlaw Jesse James was shot dead at his family home on Lafayette Street, St.
